At midnight tonight, stores across the world will open their doors and begin selling the much anticipated Xbox 360-exclusive Gears of War 3 to the masses. While much of the gameâs content (and even the gameâs campaign) has been leaked onto the internet, many fans are still wondering what all of the multiplayer unlocks will be. Luckily, that information has been leaked too, as weâve found several different videos that show off all of the unlockable multiplayer characters and weapons skins that are available for your amusement in Gears of War 3.
Most of the in-game skins featured in the videos are ones that gamers will have to pay to unlock, but some of the content was made available by Epic Games for those willing to put in the extra effort. There is also a larger amount of characters to choose from this time around, with even more becoming available via expensive DLC in the near future.
Check out the full list of Gears of War 3 microtransaction skins and find out how much players will go in debt to buy them then check out what they look like in action below. Without further delay, here are four different videos that show off all of the multiplayer unlockables in Gears of War 3.

Thatâs certainly a lot of different options that will help gamers in their quest to have the most unique Gear/Locust. Let me also be the first to say that, Marcus Fenix without his signature skull cap bandana just looks bizarre, and we demand that we never have lay witness to such an atrocity ever again.
Gears of War 3 looks to be the biggest and best game in the series thus far (if you donât believe me then check out our review of Gears 3), and the addition of unlockable character and weapons skins makes levelling your character up more compelling than previous instalments.
There will be even more characters and weapon skins available this November when Gears 3âs first batch of downloadable content launches, so you better get busy unlocking all of the in-game ones as soon as you get your hands on the title.

Gears of War 3 Characters List
With the release of Gears of War 3 on the horizon, here is a list of characters we can expect to see in the third installment!
Gears of War 3 will take place during planet Seraâs Summer and is set 18 months after the end of Gears 2.
So far, the game has been revealed to begin on the Ravenâs Nest, where a group of former COG, including Marcus Fenix, Dominic Santiago, and Anya Stroud, are trying to live out their lives in what peace they can. Things start to get complicated though when Richard Prescott appears and reveals that Adam Fenix is still alive. Watch The Latest Gaming News:
Sixteen characters have been announced in the gameâs cast.
So letâs take a look at the cast of characters of Gears of War 3!
Marcus Fenix
Voiced by John DiMaggio
Sergeant Marcus Fenix was a Gear soldier in the Coalition of Ordered Governments army. A legendary war hero, Marcus served with distinction in the Pendulum Wars which earned him the Embry Star, the COGâs highest military award, for his actions during the Battle of Aspho Fields. Like the rest of humankind, he saw everything change on Emergence Day. Marcus bravely fought the Locust for ten years until the Battle of Ephyra, where he abandoned his post to rescue his father, Professor Adam Fenix, but could not reach him in time.
A professional soldier, Marcus Fenix is generally gruff and aggressive. He is a natural leader; being promoted to corporal not long after he joined the army, and was promoted to sergeant after the death of Lt. Kim. Dominic Santiago
Voiced by Carlos Ferro
Corporal Dominic âDomâ Santiago was a Gear soldier in the Coalition of Ordered Governments army. Dom was the younger brother of Carlos Santiago and son of Eduardo Santiago and Eva Santiago. Born in a Pre E-Day Sera, he grew up listening to his fatherâs war stories and going to school with Carlos and best friend Marcus Fenix. When the COG collapsed, Dom joined the rest of Delta aboard the CNV Sovereign, serving as a member of a rapid response force that defended former COG communities.
Dominic Santiago was known for his out right loyalty to his friend and some fear in the COG high command that his loyalty conflicts with loyalty to the COG. Augustus Cole
Voiced by Lester âThe Mighty Rastaâ Speight
Private Augustus Cole or Gus was once a successful Thrashball player known for his hard-hitting and flamboyant style. After Emergence Day, Cole joined the military as a Gear soldier, and brought that same âgrit and intensityâ to the battlefield, which saved his life more than once. Cole has spent most of his military career alongside his friend and foil, Damon Baird. Throughout his career as a Gear, he has rejected every military promotion that has been offered under the grounds that having rank is not going to affect how many Locust he can kill.
When it comes to killing Locust, he considers himself the best of the best. While his natural energy and exuberance are for real, he exaggerates it around his squad mates to instill confidence and raise morale. Damon S. Baird
Voiced by Fred Tatasciore
Corporal Damon Baird was a Gear soldier who was an expert in several technical and mechanical fields. He joined the Coalition of Ordered Governments army on Emergence Day, and soon after met Augustus Cole, who became his only friend. When the COG collapsed, Baird joined the rest of Delta aboard the CNV Sovereign as part of the rapid response force that would assist several settlements the remnants of the COG had set up on the mainland.
Baird is a rather negative and sarcastic person, and is usually unkind. He speaks his mind freely, a trait that often annoys (even hurts) others, and most often gets him into trouble. Samantha Byrne
Voiced by Claudia Black
Private Samantha âSamâ Byrne, also called âduchashkaâ or âlovely duchessâ by the Gorasni, was a female Gear soldier that fought in Delta-One during the Stranded Insurgency and the Lambent Invasion. When the Coalition of Ordered Governments collapsed and was forced to abandon Vectes, Sam chose to go on the CNV Sovereign as part of the rapid response force that could assist several different settlements the COG remnants had set up. Sam was of the daughter of a Kashkuri liaison to the COG army and a Tyran Gear.
Sam feels she has to prove she is willing to take more risk than the male Gears, something that Col.Victor Hoffman thought of as a liability unless Sam had a good commander. Clayton Carmine
Voiced by Michael Gough
Clayton âClayâ Carmine was one of the four Carmine brothers. As the oldest brother in the Carmine family, he is an experienced and veteran Gear; unfortunately, he is also one of only two surviving members of the Carmine Family. A soldier during the Locust War, he continued fighting in the Lambent Invasion alongside Delta-One.
Clayton has a tattoo of his two brothers, Anthony and Benjamin, on his right arm and a Lancer Assault Rifle with the words âBorn 2 Sawâ. On his armor the words âGRUB KILLERâ, âKEEP YOUR HEAD DOWNâ, âPRACTICE RELOADINGâ, and âDESTROY LOCUSTâ are inscribed and he appears more intimidating and has a greater blood lust than his brothers. Victor S. Hoffman
Voiced by Jamie Alcroft
Colonel Victor S. Hoffman was a Gear officer and the Chief of Defense Staff of the Coalition of Ordered Governments during the Locust War and former director of special forces, answering only to Chairman Richard Prescott. Hoffman hated being promoted so high, preferring to remain a frontline Gear. He is a battlefield commander, and has fought alongside his fellow Gears in the Pendulum Wars, the Locust War, and the Lambent Invasion.
A military man to the core, Hoffman demands discipline and sacrifice from those under his command. Hoffman is a by-the-book soldier known to lead his men into combat. Bernadette Mataki
Voiced by Tess Masters
Sergeant Bernadette âBernieâ Mataki, or Boomer lady by Cole and Granny by Baird, was a Gear soldier in the Coalition of Ordered Governments armed forces. Bernie was born on the island of Galangi in the South Islands during the 33rd year of the Pendulum Wars. She was the daughter of a farmer, who came from an Northerner family. After joining the COG at eighteen years of age, she became one of the best snipers in the army.
Bernie is proud, and most notably well-trained to survive in the wilderness alone. Jace Stratton
Voiced by Michael .B. Jordan
Corporal Jayson âJaceâ Stratton was a survivor of Emergence Day and a Gear soldier in the Coalition of Ordered Governments army. He served in Delta-One and Midnight Squad, and later became the commander of Alpha-Seven during Operation: Hollow Storm.
A religious man, Jace had doubts about a higher power after fighting in the Locust War and watching his family and best friend Gil die during the war and witnessing the deaths of many innocents, but restored his faith after saving a girl and her mother. Jace is also very smart and analytical, managing to even impress Baird by listening to him and helping him figure out what happened to the Harvest and other vessels. Anya Stroud
Voiced by Nan McNamara
Lieutenant Anya Stroud was a Gear officer in the Coalition of Ordered Governments army and the daughter of Major Helena Stroud. She joined the COG army to follow in her motherâs footsteps, but unlike her mother, she did not serve as a frontline Gear. Stroud instead became a communications officer and served in her motherâs unit during the Pendulum Wars, it was there that she met Marcus Fenix. She began to train to become a frontline Gear, while still serving as a controller and, when the Lambent emerged, Anya fully embraced being on the frontline, fighting alongside the Delta Squad.
Early in her life, Anya often felt overshadowed and in awe of her mother. Although very beautiful, Anya didnât seem to know she was considered to be such by others. When her mother was killed, Anya became stronger, firmer and more independent. Queen Myrrah
Voiced by Carolyn Seymour
Queen Myrrah was the Queen of the Locust Horde during both the Locust Civil War and Locust War simultaneously, and then continued in the Lambent Invasion with the remaining loyal Locust Horde forces. Leading her people hoping to colonize the surface and to destroy the Lambent threat in the Hollow, she leads the genocide of the Human race. Due to her status over her subjects as the Queen, the Locust treat her with the utmost respect, dying for her if necessary. In the Chain of Command in the Locust Horde, Queen Myrrah is the central leader.
Myrrah holds cynical and xenophobic views, which drive her ruthless war tactics. Adam Fenix
Voiced by Peter Renaday
Professor and retired Major Adam Jonathon Fenix was a former Gear and devoted professor at the Lacroix University, as well as a member of the Defense Research Agency. He was the husband of Doctor Elaine Fenix and father of legendary war hero Marcus Fenix. He fought in the Pendulum Wars, but accepted a position designing weapons to try to end the war faster.
Adam was a caring yet distant father. This pushed his son Marcus further away from him and towards the Santiago family. Adam Fenix also had a great sense of responsibility for the men and women under his command, and he took every death personally and doubted how the Pendulum Wars were being fought. Richard Prescott
Voiced by Charles Cioffi
The Honorable Chairman Richard Prescott was the Chairman of the Coalition of Ordered Governments during the Locust War. The son of David Prescott, a former Chairman during the Pendulum Wars, Prescott served as a Gear but never saw combat due to his political connections.
Due to his dedication to the Coalition, Prescott is known to be available at any time â day or night.[49] Prescott would do anything for the COG, even sacrificing the few for the many. Some of his methods cross both moral and ethical lines. Prescottâs greatest skills however, lay in his ability to give speeches and inspire confidence, but he is also an extremely skilled liar. Aaron Griffin
Voiced by Ice-T
Aaron Griffin was a Stranded leader who fought alongside the Gears against the Locust and Lambent during the Lambent Invasion. He was a business man based in Char, where he built an empire based on Imulsion.
Quentin Michaelson
Captain Quentin Michaelson was the captain of the Coalition of Ordered Governments navy vessel CNV Pomeroy and commander of D-flotilla during Operation Leveler. During the Locust War, Michaelson was in command of counter piracy for the COG Navy. After the evacuation of Jacinto City, Michaelson was promoted to head of the navy, and assisted in the decision to move the remnants of the COG to the island of Vectes. When the COG eventually collapsed, and Michaelson commanded the remnants of the fleet from the CNV Sovereign, running the rapid response force that helped out the onshore communities established by the former COG.
Victor Hoffman thought of Michaelson as âraffishâ with an eye for women. However, when he was wearing armor, he went from âraffishâ to âquietly menacingâ. He is also considered very charming. Tomas Dalyell
Chairman Tomas Dalyell was the Chairman of the Coalition of Ordered Governments during the final years of the Pendulum Wars.
Colonel Hoffman described Dalyell more of a businessman then a politician. Dalyell was also quite determined and steadfast, ready to do anything to preserve the nation of Tyrus and the COG and all of its ideals.

(Redirected from List of Gears of War characters)
Gears of War is a video game franchise created by Epic Games, developed and managed by The Coalition, and owned and published by Xbox Game Studios. The series focuses on the conflict between humanity, the subterranean reptilian hominids known as the Locust Horde, and their mutated counterparts, the Lambent and the Swarm. The franchise consists of five third-person shooter video games, which has also been supplemented by a comic book series and five novels.
The first installment, titled Gears of War, was released on November 7, 2006 for the Xbox 360. The game follows protagonist Marcus Fenix, a soldier in the Coalition of Ordered Governments tasked to lead a last-ditch effort to destroy the Locust Horde and save humanity. Two subsequent titles, Gears of War 2 (2008) and Gears of War 3 (2011), continued Fenix and humanity's ongoing conflict with the Locust Horde and Lambent forces. In 2013, Epic Games and Microsoft released Gears of War: Judgment, a prequel to the seriesâ first title, which instead focuses on Damon Baird, one of Fenix's squad-mates.[1]Gears of War: Ultimate Edition was released for Microsoft Windows on March 1, 2016.[2] The series' third sequel, Gears of War 4, is set 25 years after Gears of War 3 and follows Marcus Fenix's son, JD, as he battles a new resurrected Locust Horde that once again threatens humanity.[3]
Gears of War was developed by Epic Games. Cliff Bleszinski, who has previously worked on Epic's Unreal Tournament games, served the seriesâ lead game designer for the first three installments. He was inspired by gameplay elements from Resident Evil 4, Kill Switch, and Bionic Commando.[4] The series was also guided by Rod Fergusson, the executive producer and director of development of Epic Games until 2012.[5][6] The first four installments of the Gears of War series used a modified version of the Unreal Engine 3 engine.[7][8] On January 27, 2014, Microsoft acquired all rights to the franchise from Epic Games. Canadian studio The Coalition developed Gears of War 4, which was released on October 11, 2016 for the Xbox One and Windows 10.[9]
Gears of War became one of the best-selling franchises for the Xbox 360.[10] The series is well known for its emphasis on cover-based combat, in which players can use objects to avoid gunfire or safely engage enemies.[11] All five installments in Gears of War featured several multiplayer modes that allowed players to compete against each other or team-up to battle AI opponents on Xbox Live. The Gears of War games have been amongst the most popular and most played titles on Xbox Live.[10][12]
Setting[edit]
The Gears of War series takes place on Sera, a fictional Earth-like planet. Human civilization develops on Sera and endures a millennia-long conflict that leaves humanity on the brink of extinction. Sera's leaders broker an era of peace that ushers an era of scientific advancements and a cultural renaissance. Humanity's population sporadically grows and demands more energy provided by fossil and nuclear fuels. Sera's scientists discover Imulsion, a naturally occurring substance that can be refined into a potent energy source. Imulsion solves Sera's energy crisis but ultimately creates great economic disparity. Nations with direct access to Imulsion prosper, while other nations fall into financial turmoil.
Sera's citizens balkanize into two warring factions: the Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG) and Union of Independent Republics (UIR). The ensuing 79-year strife, known as the âPendulum Warsâ, consumes millions of lives with both sides locked in a virtual stalemate. The UIR develops the 'Hammer of Dawn', a system of satellites capable of delivering precise and potent orbital-to-surface laser strikes. However, a contingent of COG commandos, led by Marcus Fenix, Dom Santiago, and Victor Hoffman launch a daring raid on a UIR stronghold and steal the schematics for the Hammer of Dawn. The UIR quickly surrenders after witnessing the Hammer of Dawn devastate one of their naval vessels.
Merely six weeks after the COG and UIR agreed to an armistice, the Locust Horde unexpectedly emerge from Sera's depths and begin assaulting all human cities. The Locust Horde easily overwhelms the already battleworn COG forces during this surprise attack, referred to as 'Emergence Day'. The COG retreats to the Jacinto Plateau, their last bastion, and reluctantly bombard their own cities with the Hammer of Dawn to halt the Locust Horde's offensive. The ensuing scorched earth tactic destroys much of Sera's cities and human population. The COG continues to operate out of Jacinto, while the surviving humans, known as Stranded, are left to wander through Sera's charred ruins. During the chaos of Emergence Day, Marcus led an unauthorized and failed rescue mission to save his father, Adam, from the Locust assault. The COG's leadership court martials Marcus and sentences him to life imprisonment.
The first Gears of War title is set 14 years after the Locust emerged and attacked Sera's human population. The COG forces devise a last-ditch offensive to destroy the Locust Horde with 'lightmass bombs', weaponized forms of Imulsion. Marcus Fenix, now a disgraced veteran, is reinstated into the COG army, to supplement the COG's depleted ranks. Marcus joins his best friend, Dom Santiago, on a mission to map the Locust Horde's tunnel network in preparation for the bombing. However, their unit is ambushed by Locust Ground forces and sustain heavy casualties. Fenix and Santiago regroup with two other survivors, Augustus Cole and Damon Baird, and continue their mission. Marcus ultimately prevails in not only mapping, but successfully deploying the lightmass bombs and crippling the Locust Horde.
In Gears of War 2, Myrrah, the Locust leader, regroups her remaining forces and organizes a counteroffensive. The crux of her plan revolves around using a giant worm-like creature to sink the cities around the Jacinto Plateau until the COG stronghold itself collapses. The COG Forces in-turn deploy several soldiers directly into the depths of Sera to directly battle the Locust Horde and stop Myrrah's plan. Marcus discovers that members of the Locust Horde are mutating from exposure from Imulsion into âLambentâ. These abominations are forcing the Locust to abandon their underground civilization to try claim the surface world as their new home. Marcus devises a plan to intentionally sink Jacinto and using the surrounding sea water to flood the Locust and Lambent tunnel network. The COG evacuate Jacinto just as the city collapses and drowns a majority of the Locust Horde.
Gears of War 3 marks the final main-line installment in the original Gears of War trilogy. Set 18 months after Marcus sinks Jacinto, the game opens to reveal the COG has disbanded and left humanity scattered across Sera. The Lambent are now a major threat to humanity's scarce population, while the surviving members of the Locust Horde retreat to settlements in Sera's wastelands. Marcusâ father, Adam, who was presumed to have been deceased, notifies the COG that he is alive on Azura, an isolated island, and possess a solution to eradicate the Locust and Lambent threats. Marcus and his allies reach Azura after Dom sacrifices himself to rescue his friends from imminent demise. Adam is rescued and releases his anti-Locust and Lambent weapon but reveals he infected himself with the Lambent contagion to develop the weapon. The weapon's energy wave destroys all Locust and Lambent forces, including Adam. Marcus personally kills Myrrah and dedicates her demise to his fallen friends, family, and comrades.
The fourth game, Gears of War: Judgment, focuses on Baird and Cole during the early days after Emergence Day. With military cadet Sofia Hendrick and Garron Paduk, a former UIR soldier, they comprise the Kilo Squad. Baird disobeys orders to use a secret weapon of mass destruction to destroy Locust forces and save survivors at Halvo Bay. Despite also killing the powerful Locust leader Karn, the squad is court-martialed because they disobeyed orders and Baird is demoted from officer to private. A separate campaign, 'Aftermath', portrays Baird, Cole, and Paduk in the hours before the activation of the anti-Imulsion energy wave.
Microsoft announced Gears of War 4 at E3 2015 on June 15. The game takes place 25 years after the original Gears of War trilogy and primarily concentrates on Marcusâ son, JD Fenix.[13] The COG reestablish itself thanks to creation of robotic soldiers. Many civilians instead choose to live on the outskirts of the COG's walled cities. JD, accompanied by his friends Kait and Del conduct frequent raids on COG fortifications to acquire various supplies. The three successfully fend off a COG counterattack only to have their encampment devastated by a new foe, called the Swarm. Kait's mother, Reyna, is captured during the chaos.[13]
JD, Kate, and Del reach out to Marcus, now a disgruntled COG expatriate, who reluctantly agrees to help them. The COG, led by First Minister Jinn, pursue the group after erroneously believing they are behind a string of mass-kidnappings. The four reach a Locust mass-burial site, where they uncover evidence suggestion that Adam Fenix's lightmass weapon caused the Locust Horde to enter a cocooned metamorphosis state. Their fears are confirmed when various Locust Horde soldiers attack them in conjunction with the Swarm. The group receives assistance from Damon Baird, now a successful industrialist, along with Augustus Cole, and Samantha Byrne. They battle their way to the Swarm's hive and defeat multiple Swarm and Locust monstrosities. However, they reach the hive to learn that Swarm's hive-mind has forcefully integrated with Reyna. Kait frees her mother, knowing she will die but will no longer suffer. Reyna gives Kait a parting gift that belonged to her mother â a necklace bearing the insignia of the Locust Queen Myrrah.[13]
Gameplay[edit]
Marcus Fenix, the player-controlled character, takes aim from behind the cover at a Locust with the Lancer. The game uses an over-the-shoulder camera angle when displaying the targeting reticle.
Gears of War is a third-person shooter game, with its core concepts being derived from Resident Evil 4's 'over the shoulder' perspective, Kill Switch's cover system, and Bionic Commando's swinging action akin to moving between points of cover.[14] The series focuses on using cover to tactically engage the enemy in battle to avoid taking damage. While behind cover, the player can fire blindly and inaccurately at their opponent, or can look around the cover and aim carefully, though exposing himself to enemy fire; the player can also slide along cover, move between nearby cover, or vault over cover to race to a new point of cover. As the player takes damage, the 'Crimson Omen' appears on the HUD, becoming more defined as the player nears low health levels. The player can regenerate their health by staying out of harm's way for a short while. Should the player take too much damage, they will become incapacitated unless revived by a teammate; depending on game mode, the player may be able to recover from this state on their own, or may die after a short amount of time if not revived. When a combatant is down, a member of the other side may also attempt to execute the downed player via a 'curb stomp' or other brutal methods. As well, some types of damage will immediately kill the player with no chance of revival, such as explosive damage. There are five levels on the first two games, but they are referred to as 'acts' and each act is formed into a certain amount of chapters.
Players in Gears can only carry four different weapons, with the exception of the fourth game, allowing two primary weapon slots that can carry weapons which include, but are not limited to: assault rifles, shotguns, a sniper rifle, grenade launchers and an explosive bow; one grenade slot, which may be filled with up to four grenades of a specific type (Fragmentation, Smoke, Ink and Incendiary), and one pistol-type weapon. Players can either obtain ammo or swap out their current weapons with any weapon dropped by a downed foe or from those scattered around the various maps. Most weapons feature the 'Active Reload' ability: either after a weapon has depleted an ammo magazine or when the player starts a manual reload, a meter is shown on screen, and the player can attempt to stop the meter in a certain marked area. If the player stops the meter in the marked area, their reload will be completed faster than if they did not attempt an Active Reload, and if the player can stop the meter at a specific section of the marked area, they will gain a temporary slight damage boost with each reloaded shot and a faster reload. If the player stops the meter outside this area, their gun will become temporarily jammed and slow down the reload time. While most of the weapons are based on standard shooter archetypes, Gears's signature weapon is the Lancer, an assault rifle that has a mounted chainsawbayonet which can be used in close quarter combat to instantly kill a standard foe. Most other weapons also can be used to bash opponents in melee, or in the case of grenades, can be stuck to a foe, exploding a few seconds later. In Gears of War 2 & 3, all four types of grenades can be planted on any reachable surface, detonating when an opponent comes close to it. If the opponent spots the grenade, he or she can detonate it from a safe distance by shooting it.
All Gears games feature a campaign mode that can be played cooperatively with one other player. The two players take the roles of two COG soldiers, Marcus Fenix and Dominic 'Dom' Santiago, as they fight the Locust. In the third game the campaign allows for up to four players to play together at the same time. The campaign mode features several levels of difficulty. At various times, the campaign will offer a choice of paths the first player can select; if the second player is present, they will be forced to take the other path. The third and fourth players in Gears of War 3 will be separated between the paths of the first and second players. In these areas, all players generally have to work together to get them through the section, such as by one player providing covering fire while the second player opens a switch that allows the first player to then proceed.
The competitive multiplayer mode in Gears 1 features 8 players while in Gears 2 features up to ten players split between COG and Locust forces in a number of gameplay types. Modes include 'Warzone' and 'Execution', both similar to a typical deathmatch, and 'Annex' and 'King of the Hill' where teams have to control a marked zone on the map. In the mode 'Guardian,'(only in Gears 2) one member of each team is designated as the leader. As long as the leader is still alive, his or her teammates can respawn indefinitely. As soon as the leader is executed, his or her teammates can no longer respawn.
Gears of War 3 features better AI, as in past games the AI went around the obstacle even if it had been destroyed. However, in Gears 3 the AI will recognize that the obstacle has been destroyed and are free to walk over it.[15]
Games[edit]
Gears of War[edit]
Gears of War is a third-person shootervideo game developed by Epic Games and published by Microsoft Studios. It was initially released for the Xbox 360 on November 7, 2006 in North America, and on November 17, 2006 in Europe.[16] While it was initially released as an exclusive title, it was also released for the PC on June 11, 2007. Gears of War follows Delta Squad's efforts to help deploy a Lightmass bomb deep in the Locust tunnels to wipe out the Locust threat.
In April 2015, it was confirmed that a remastering of the game was being developed for the Xbox One, with The Coalition working on the project, after Microsoft acquired the rights to the Gears franchise from Epic Games in 2014.[17]
Gears of War 2[edit]
Gears of War 2 is a third-person shooter video game published by Microsoft Studios.[18] It is the sequel to Gears of War, and was announced by lead designer Cliff Bleszinski during the February 20, 2008 Game Developers Conference. It was released worldwide November 7, 2008. The game uses a heavily upgraded version of the Unreal Engine 3.[19]Gears of War 2 takes place after the first game, where the Locust are now attempting to sink Jacinto Plateau, and the COG forces have decided to launch a counter-offensive to stop them before they can complete their attempt. Ultimately the COG sinks Jacinto themselves to flood the home of the Locust (the Hollow) and drown them.
A PC version of the game was cancelled by the developers, citing poor sales of the original PC version of Gears of War as well as concerns over piracy.
Gears of War 3[edit]
Gears of War 3 is the concluding part to the trilogy. Originally with an April 6, 2011 release date, it was moved to September 20, 2011 to anchor Microsoft Studios' holiday portfolio for the Xbox 360.[20]
Gears of War 3 takes place 18 months after the end of Gears of War 2. Marcus, Dom, and the last remnants of humanity must band together to survive against the Locust and Lambent, while trying to find Marcus's father and end the war.[21] In the end, a weapon developed by Marcus' father Adam Fenix is detonated, wiping out the Locust and the Lambent, as well as ending the war. It is also 4 player
Gears of War: Judgment[edit]
Gears of War: Judgment is the fourth installment of the Gears of War series released on March 19, 2013.[22] It was first announced on May 31, 2012 and was revealed at E3 on June 4, 2012. At the conference they showed off the first trailer, mainly focused on series mainstay Baird. He is accompanied by Augustus 'Cole Train' Cole and two new characters, Garron Paduk and Sofia Hendrik,[23] who make up Kilo Squad. Kilo Squad is ultimately put on trial by another new character, Ezra Loomis.[23]
Gears of War 4[edit]
Gears of War 4 is an Xbox One and Windows 10 game developed by The Coalition and released on October 11, 2016.[24]
The game's plot is set 25 years after Gears of War 3 and focuses on JD Fenix, the son of Marcus Fenix.[25]
Gears POP![edit]
Gears POP! is a spinoff of the series for mobile devices based on Funko's POP! toyline.
Gears Tactics[edit]
Gears Tactics is a PC-exclusive turn-based strategy spinoff.
Gears 5[edit]
Gears 5 is a sequel to Gears of War 4. It is scheduled to be released in 2019.[26]
Other games[edit]
Characters from the Gears of War series have made guest appearances in games outside of the Gears of War franchise. Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago are playable in the Xbox 360 version of Lost Planet 2.[27] General RAAM was announced as a playable character in Killer Instinct: Season Three during Microsoft's E3 2016 press conference on June 13, 2016, and was released following the presentation's conclusion.[28]
Backwards compatibility[edit]
Microsoft announced on August 3, 2015 that the four Gears of War titles that launched on Xbox 360 â Gears of War, Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3, and Gears of War: Judgment â will be available on Xbox One through the backwards compatibility program.[29]
Music[edit]
The video game music for Gears of War was composed by Kevin Riepl, who had previously worked with Epic Games on soundtracks for Unreal Tournament 2003, Unreal Tournament 2004 and Unreal Championship 2.[30] The music for Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 3 was composed by Steve Jablonsky.[31] The music for Gears of War 4 is composed by Ramin Djawadi.[32]
Additionally, the franchise has inspired music from other artists. American thrash metal band Megadeth recorded a song for the first game's release, first as an instrumental then with lyrics. For the third game, rapper Ice-T, who was cast as Griffin, reunited his metal band Body Count to record a song centered around the Gears universe.
Adaptations[edit]The Board Game[edit]
Gears of War: The Board Game was released in 2011 by Fantasy Flight Games. Designed by Corey Konieczka, it is a cooperative game for up to four players, including the option for solo play. Each player takes control of a COG (represented by a miniature figure pre-painted in red), fighting their way through randomly generated maps filled with Locust soldiers (represented by a miniature figure pre-painted in light gray). These are controlled by an AI deck of cards: after each player finishes his or her turn, he or she draws a card from the AI deck and takes actions for each Locust creature. Players play cards and roll dice to take actions as well as to resolve shooting and defense. The game proceeds until the player team successfully completes the mission. There are seven different missions, each featuring different objectives and enemies in randomly generated map layouts. Since its launch, the game has received one expansion, Mission Pack 1, which brought more weapons, two new missions and new enemies, including General RAAM.
Books[edit]
A series of novels based on the fictional universe has been created, all written by Karen Traviss. The books expand on the games and detail events which occur in between installments.[citation needed]Gears of War: Aspho Fields was the first in an expected trilogy,[33] although the total numbers of books has since grown to five. It focused on the history of the characters and the battle at Aspho Fields, but also took place during the events between Gears of War and Gears of War 2.[34] The second novel, Gears of War: Jacinto's Remnant, continued where Gears of War 2 left off, with Jacinto's survivors fleeing the ruins of the city and searching for a new safe haven. Later they enter into a new conflict against the Stranded who have begun a guerilla war against the remnants of the COG. The book also detailed events 1 year after E-Day, when the new COG Chairman authorized the Hammer of Dawn counterattack.[citation needed]Gears of War: Anvil Gate is the third novel, released on August 31, 2010.[35] The novel details the COG attempting to establish themselves on the island of Vectes, while trying to contain a Stranded insurgency and the resurgent Lambent. A flashback story details a young Hoffman during the Siege of Anvil Gate.[citation needed]Gears of War: Coalition's End, released in August 2011, is the fourth novel in the series, taking place immediately after the events of Anvil Gate; 18 months after the end of the second game. The novel details the COG's struggle with the Lambent attacks on the island of Vectes, and leads directly into Gears of War 3.[citation needed]Gears of War: The Slab is the fifth and final book in the series released in May 2012. The novel focuses on Marcus Fenix's time in Jacinto Maximum Security Prison prior to Gears of War, and reveals more backstory on him, Victor Hoffman, and Adam Fenix.[citation needed]
Comic-book series[edit]
Gears of War: Hollow was the first comic book series based on the Gears of War world. It was first announced by Epic Games and DC Comics on 18 April 2008 and was released in December 2008. The series was published under DC's Wildstorm imprint and was written by Joshua Ortega, with art by Liam Sharp. The story arc followed Jace Stratton, a young recruit of Delta Squad who made an appearance in Gears of War 3 and Michael Barrick, a solo Gear found by Delta. The arc was 6 issues long and ended in May 2009.
Two stand-alone comic book series were then released. Issue 7, 'The Quickening', followed the life of Tai Kaliso from his home in the South Islands to the torture den of the Locust Horde. This was released on June 9, 2009.
The second stand-alone was Harper's Story. In Gears of War 2 there are collectibles which describe the end of Sgt. Jonathan Harper, a Gears Veteran. He was captured by the Locust during the events of the Hollow. He managed not only to survive the vile deeds of the Locust Horde but also to escape. He helped a family reach safety, taking the bullets into his own body before falling to the ground.
Issue number 9 begins a new arc, Barren, of which the first part was released in September 2009. We are introduced to the 'other side' of the life of humans faced by total annihilation. Birthing Creches, or Breeding Farms, filled with women who are there to just have baby after baby, and nothing else. With humanity dying out and no fresh faces to replace fallen Gears, new humans are needed. The story focuses on an escapee from one of these centers named Alex Brand. Declared to be barren at the age of 18, Brand was kicked from the Breeding Farm she was born in, sent to Boot Camp and trained to be a Gear. She accompanies Delta and Sigma Squads as they investigate a mysterious beacon call from the place at which she was born, which was thought to have been destroyed by Locust.[36][37][38]
Film[edit]
On March 21, 2007, it was announced that New Line Cinema had purchased the rights to make a Gears of Warfilm, with Stuart Beattie writing the script along with Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey, who will be producing it.[39] Producer Wyck Godfrey said of the film adaptation, 'I'm not a gamer, but what blew me away about Gears was how it captures the mythology of a war mission and how high the stakes are.'[40] On August 3, 2007, AICN.com reported that Len Wiseman was to direct the movie adaptation of Gears of War,[41] though on March 30, 2007, Godfrey stated that they have 'a director we're about to attach' in order to film the movie during 2009 and release in 2010. Cliff Bleszinski, the lead designer of the Gears of War video games, will serve as executive producer and consultant.[42]
Wiseman was officially signed on in June 2008, with Chris Morgan performing script rewrites.[42] Morgan hinted on G4's televised coverage of Comic Con 2008 that the film would be a prequel to the first game, 'it could explain how Marcus Fenix got his scar.'[43] According to Morgan, Wiseman 'wants to make it as realistic as possible, and to blur those lines where your mind says, 'Oh, it's a big CGI film.''.[44] On December 8, 2009, Wyck Godfrey sat down with MakingOf to talk about the 'Gears of War' movie, and said that 'to tell the epic story of an alien planet that's living in a horrific environment just feels like the wrong mood right now'.[45]
In April 2010, New Line considerably scaled back the $100 million budget and epic story, stalling progress while they waited for a rewrite. Len Wiseman was no longer involved as he shifted his focus to other projects.[46]
In April 2013, Variety reported that 'Creative Artists Agency is eager to meet with producers in the coming weeks and set up the project elsewhere,' and that Stuart Beattie will write the film.[47]Scott Stuber is named to produce the film.[48]
At the launch ceremony for Gears of War 4 in October 2016, The Coalition's Rod Fergusson affirmed that a Gears of War movie is currently at development at Universal Pictures. Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark will produce the film under Universal's Bluegrass Films division, but no director or writer has been selected at this point. Fergusson also stated that where the film takes place relative to the games has been determined.[49] On May 3, 2017, Universal hired Shane Salerno to write the screenplay with Fergusson stating, 'the movie won't be based on one of the games but a new story set in the universe.'[50] On November 28, 2018, The Wrap reported that F. Scott Frazier will write the film's script.[51] On June 17, 2019, IGN reported that the movie won't be set in the game franchise.[52]
Reception[edit]
All of the Gears of War titles have been received positively, and the original trilogy is critically acclaimed. IGN rated Gears of War 3 the 22nd best Xbox 360 game, out of a list of 25.[62] In 2010, Lasse Pulkkinen from Techno Buffalo called Gears of War 2 the best looking game on the Xbox 360.[63]
Sales[edit]
According to Microsoft, the Gears of War series has sold over 22 million units and earned over US$1 billion in revenue as of January 2014.[64][65]
Merchandise[edit]
TriForce Sales has obtained a license from Epic Games to create full-scale replicas of the armor and weapons from the game, with assistance of sculptor Sid Garrand of Nightmare Armor Studios. The units were available for advanced order in July 2008.[66]
In July 2007,[67]NECA announced they would be producing Gears of War merchandise, including action figures. The first series, available in the second quarter of 2008, included Augustus Cole, Anthony Carmine, Baird, a Locust Drone, a Locust Sniper, Dom Santiago and Marcus Fenix.[68]
Mindzeye Studios has created foot high statues of Gears of War characters.[69]
Legal issues[edit]
In January 2017, former American football player Lenwood Hamilton sued Epic Games, Microsoft, and voice actor Lester Speight, stating that the character of Cole Train in the series steals from his own likeness and voice. The lawsuit contends that elements of Cole's character, including being of African-American descent, having played in professional sports, and elements of the character's clothings were all elements representative of Hamilton, and voice analysis shows that Speight's delivery of Cole's lines matches too close with Hamilton's line. Hamilton had stated that Speight had approached him around 1998 about a video game, though Hamilton had turned it down due to the violence that would be in the game.[70]

Gears of War 3 is a military science fictionthird-person shootervideo game developed by Epic Games and published by Microsoft Studios for the Xbox 360. It is the third installment of the Gears of War series.[1] Originally due for release on April 8, 2011, the game was delayed and eventually released on September 20, 2011.[2] The story was written by science fiction author Karen Traviss.[3]
Like its predecessors, the game received widespread critical acclaim from critics. Critics praised its story, voice acting, graphics and visuals, and music, but criticized its lack of innovation. Gears of War 3 sold over 3 million copies and was the second best selling game in the U.S.
A sequel, titled Gears of War 4, was announced in June 2015 and was released on October 11, 2016.
Gameplay[edit]
Like its predecessors, Gears of War 3 is a third-person shooter that emphasizes the use of cover and squad tactics in order to survive combat situations. The player's character can carry four weapons: one pistol, one set of grenades, and two primary weapons. Firearms can be swapped with other weapons dropped by fallen foes or at stockpiles throughout the game, along with ammunition. When the player reloads a weapons ammunition, they have an opportunity for an 'active reload', shown by a small cursor moving over a line with a marked section on the player's heads-up display (HUD). If the player hits a control button when the cursor is in the marked section, they will reload faster with the resulting reload being slightly more powerful than normal bullets, causing more damage to opponents as well as allowing for more 'knockback' meaning that enemies running directly at you will be slowed on shot. If they press the button outside this section, this temporarily jams the weapon, leaving the player vulnerable and taking longer to reload. Alternatively, the player can opt to not try for the active reload, reloading the weapon at normal speed, but with no added damage.

When in combat, the player can take some damage from enemy fire, filling a blood-colored 'crimson omen' on the HUD as a measure of the player's health, unlike the traditional health bar in other shooters. By staying out of the line of fire, this will dissipate over time, but by taking too much damage, the player will become downed or killed, and must be 'revived' by an ally within a short 'bleed-out' period, or else the player will die, unless playing the game on Insane difficultly in which case a player will die immediately after taking too much damage without the bleed-out. The player can also be killed during the bleed-out by the use of the game's signature execution moves by the enemy. Some types of damage, such as explosives or head shots, can kill the player immediately without the bleed-out period. Similarly, the player can also cause enemies to fall into bleed-out in the same manner. The player and their allies and enemies can use nearly any structure as cover, firing blind from behind it or leaning out to take aimed shots while usually exposing their head more. Players can quickly switch between nearby covering walls or jump over lower cover to rush forward. Within Gears of War 3, some cover can be destroyed after taking some amount of damage, which can be used to a tactical advantage to draw out enemies from cover.
New to Gears of War 3 is the ability to tag enemy opponents; computer-controlled allies will then concentrate fire on these marked enemies, while human allies will be alerted to their location on their HUD. Players can now also swap weapons and ammunition (and money during Horde Mode) with other allies in the course of battle.
The player maintains an experience level that persists across all game modes. The player earns experience through kills, performing special types of kills and executions, reviving and aiding teammates, and through general process of the campaign or competitive modes. Players can also gain experience points by winning medals and ribbons, which are awarded for defeating enemies with certain weapons or winning several matches. Earning levels unlocks the use of special characters and weapon skins within the game's multiplayer mode.
Synopsis[edit]Setting[edit]
Marcus Fenix and Delta Squad as seen during a four-player campaign co-op mission on board the CNV Sovereign.
Gears of War 3 takes place two years after Jacinto, humanity's last stronghold, is destroyed in an effort to completely eradicate the Locust Horde. The Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG) remnants relocate to Vectes, a secluded island, in order to rebuild their civilization. The COG then disbands after Chairman Prescott mysteriously disappears and seemingly abandons his forces. A new foe, the Lambent, are threatening humanity's dwindling numbers. As the Lambent begin to invade Vectes, Marcus Fenix and his comrades retreat to the CNV Sovereign, a helicopter carrier, and take refuge at sea.
Plot[edit]
Gears of War 3 begins as Chairman Prescott unexpectedly arrives on the Sovereign. Prescott informs Marcus Fenix he needs to relay important information to the ship's senior officer, Captain Michaelson. The Lambent then launch a surprise attack on the ship, which leaves Michaelson dead and Prescott mortally wounded. Before dying, Prescott gives Marcus an encryption to the disc that Colonel Hoffman has and reveals that his father, Adam Fenix, is still alive but captive on Azura, a secret COG base. Marcus, Dom, Cole, and Baird fight their way to the Anvil Gate Fortress, where Hoffman possesses the necessary equipment to decrypt Prescott's disc.[4] Upon arriving at Anvil Gate, Marcus and his comrades assist Hoffman's soldiers in repelling a combined Lambent and Locust assault.
Upon further analysis of the disc's content, Marcus learns that Azura is protected by man-made hurricane generators, making the island only accessible by submarine. Marcus and his comrades, joined by old friend Dizzy Wallin, successfully find a submarine but require Imulsion to fuel it. Dom suggests they first venture to an abandoned town called Mercy, where they discover that humans are becoming Lambent.[5] During extraction, the Gears are nearly overrun by Locust and Lambent; Dom sacrifices himself to create an explosion that wipes out the hostile forces.[6] Demoralized, they are forced to continue their search for fuel in the city of Char after their truck runs out of fuel.[7] The ruined city is inhabited by several Stranded civilians who are led by Griffin (voiced by Ice-T). Despite his dislike for the COG and Gears, Griffin reluctantly tasks Marcus to recover a supply of Imulsion.[8] After acquiring the fuel they are attacked by the Locust Horde, led by Queen Myrrah. Griffin's forces sustain heavy casualties in the ensuing battle, but the Gears are ultimately able to escape and reach the shipyards where they have to fight the Locust as they repair and fuel their submarine.[9]
Marcus' group finally arrives at Azura, discovering that it is a sanctuary and resort for Sera's most elite and powerful individuals.[10] Adam contacts the Gears and reveals he is being held captive atop Azura's main hotel tower.[11] Marcus's group battles through waves of hostiles before finding his father. Adam quickly explains that he has created a device capable of eradicating all Lambent and Locust life forms on Sera. Adam had worked with Myrrah before to try to tune the wave so that only Lambent would be affected, but with the Imulsion, revealed to be a parasitic lifeform, now infecting humans, Adam ran out of time, infuriating Myrrah.[11][12] Marcus and his comrades defend Adam from the Locust and Lambent, and from an attack by Myrrah. Adam reveals that he had to infect himself with Lambent cells in order to test his machine. As the machine begins to pulsate with energy, Adam bids his son farewell before the device kills him. Myrrah rises from the rubble and begins insulting Adam. Marcus fatally stabs Myrrah with Dom's commando knife he got back in Mercy.[13] Shortly afterwards, the machine emits a blue wave of energy that sweeps across Sera, destroying the Locust, Lambent, and the Imulsion. The scene transitions back to Marcus, who is mournfully wondering what humanity has left. He is comforted by Anya, who assures Marcus that the sacrifices of Adam, Dom, and their comrades have guaranteed humanity a future.[9]
Development[edit]Stereoscopic 3D[edit]
Gears of War 3 includes a stereoscopic mode for 3DTV sets. Adidas men's barricade boost tennis shoes. It uses TriOviz for Games Technology, which is integrated with Unreal Engine 3, for stereoscopic 3D support. All 'Gears of War 3' gameplay and cinematics have S3D support, and this extends to split-screen play as well.[14]
Multiplayer beta[edit]
On December 17, 2010, Epic Games confirmed that the Epic Edition of Bulletstorm for the Xbox 360 included early access to the multiplayer beta of Gears of War 3 and access to exclusive content. It was later announced that pre-ordering Gears of War 3 in any edition at GameStop in the United States or GAME in the United Kingdom would grant access to the public beta. The Gears of War 3 exclusive beta began on April 18, 2011, a week before the GameStop pre-order beta which began on April 25, 2011.[15] There was in-game content unlockable exclusively for beta testers that included characters and weapon skins. All players that participated in the beta received a medal to identify themselves as beta testers upon the release of the final game. The beta concluded on May 15, 2011.[16][17]
Marketing and release[edit]
According to Tim Sweeney, Gears of War 3 cost between $48,000,000 and $60,000,000 to develop.[18] The game was officially unveiled on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon by Cliff Bleszinski, with a teaser trailer featuring the song 'Heron Blue' by Sun Kil Moon.[19][20][21] Prior to the official reveal, an advert for the game was accidentally displayed on the Xbox 360 Dashboard.[20]
Retail versions[edit]
The game was available for pre-order in three retail versions: Standard, Limited, and Epic. The game also has special character variants based on where the game was pre-ordered. Confirmed variants include Mechanic Baird, Commando Dom, Savage Grenadier Elite, and Savage Kantus. On May 23, 2011, Epic Games confirmed that an exclusive replica Retro Lancer designed by NECA will be available exclusively at GameStop, while a gold version of the replica Retro Lancer is also available exclusively at Play.com.[22]
Fate of Carmine voting campaign[edit]
Clayton Carmine, brother of Anthony and Benjamin, of the previous two games, appears in Gears of War 3. Carmine is more competent, witty, and muscular in the third game, with tattoos of his brothers and the reasons they died on his arms (Keep your head down! and Practice reloading!). He was shown wielding a Mulcher machine gun in several released pictures from the game. A vote was held between July 29, 2010 and September 6, 2010 to determine whether Carmine would live or die based on sales of Xbox avatar T-shirts available for purchase on Xbox Live; Epic had developed endings reflecting either choice prior to the conclusion of the vote.[23] Additionally, actual T-shirts were available from San Diego Comic-Con with all purchases.[24] The voting campaign raised over $150,000, which was all donated to Child's Play.[25]
Collaboration with Ice-T[edit]
Ice-T voices the character of Griffin.[26] It was announced during E3 2011 that Ice-T's band, Body Count, would be reuniting to make a song titled 'The Gears of War', which was featured in the Horde 2.0 trailer.[27]
Unlockables[edit]
Announced via Twitter from Cliff Bleszinski, Gears of War 3 will have unlockables just like Gears of War 2.

Gears of War 3 trike[edit]
The Gears of War 3 trike at Comic-Con 2011.
At the San Diego Comic-Con International Convention, Paul Jr. Designs aka 'PJD', the company of Paul Teutul, Jr. Xls repair kit registration code list. from the Discovery series American Chopper, revealed their commissioned Gears of Wartrike. Discovery episodes chronicled their efforts to build the trike, visits to Epic and them interpreting various merchandising and promotional material into the bike. The team from Epic was impressed and even mentioned the possibility of adding the trike to a future game in the series.[28]
Downloadable content[edit]
On 29 August 2011, Microsoft and Epic Games announced a Gears of War 3 Season Pass that entitles gamers to the first four installments of downloadable content (at a discount) that will roll out over the course of the next year, with the first releasing in November 2011.[29] Previous characters in the series, including Tai and RAAM, will be future downloadable content characters.[30] It has also been confirmed that Story DLC will be available after launch, and that the regular cast of Gears of War will not be in future DLC.[31]
The first downloadable content is the 'Horde Command Pack', which was released on November 1, 2011. In addition to new character and weapon skins, it provides three new maps for use in Versus and Horde mode and three new fortifications that the players can build.[32]
The second downloadable content is called 'Versus Booster Map Pack'. It was released on November 24, 2011 and is available for free. The pack contains five multiplayer maps which includes Blood Drive, Azura, and Rustlung, which were originally made available through the Horde Command Pack; and Bullet Marsh and Clocktower, which will be new to Gears of War 3.
The third downloadable content is 'RAAM's Shadow'. The expansion was released on December 13, 2011.[33]It includes four new multiplayer characters, a new weapon set named 'Chocolate', new achievements, and over 3 hours of singleplayer gameplay. The story takes place before the first Gears of War, set in Sera post-emergence day. Zeta Squad is enlisted to evacuate Ilima City and protect the citizens against a Locust Kryll storm. The player will be in the role of General RAAM, the main antagonist from the first Gears of War. Zeta is led by Michael Barrick (from 'Gears of War' comics fame) and composed of returning characters such as Lt. Minh Young Kim, from the first Gears of War and Tai Kaliso from Gears of War 2, and also includes a new female character, Alicia Valera.[34]
The fourth downloadable content is entitled: 'Fenix Rising', and it was released on January 17, 2012. The DLC includes five new multiplayer maps and also introduced four new character skins and a new system that allows players to rank up through level 100 multiple times.[35]
The fifth and final[36] downloadable content, entitled 'Forces of Nature' was released on March 27, 2012. The map pack is based around weather and natural disasters and consists of three new multiplayer maps (Aftermath, Artillery, and Cove), as well as remade versions of Jacinto and Raven Down. On top of the new maps, the DLC also includes four new character models, five weapon skins ready to use immediately, and two unlockable weapon skins.[37] New Easter-egg type weapons, Elemental Cleavers, are introduced.
Reception[edit]Critical reception[edit]
Upon release, Gears of War 3 received critical acclaim, garnering an aggregate score of 91.49% on GameRankings[38] and 91/100 on Metacritic.[39]Jeff Gerstmann of Giant Bomb gave Gears of War 3 a review of 5 out of 5 stars;[48] stating 'Gears of War 3 is a fantastic follow-up that answers important questions about the nature of the Gears universe while backing it all up with an even bigger, better multiplayer suite.' IGN called it 'the spectacular conclusion to one of the most memorable and celebrated sagas in video games.'[49]Game Informer gave it a 9.5/10, saying that 'Gears 3 is a fantastic idea polished to near perfection by an enormous crew of talented developers and a bottomless budget,' with 'a constantly shuffling deck of threats that encourage players to experiment with new weapons and tactics,' 'hilariously over-the-top set piece moments,' and a 'smart approach to network play.'[44]
After Eurogamer published an 8/10[42] review for the game, Epic Games' Cliff Bleszinski reported, saying 'When people rated [Gears of War 2] higher than [Gears of War 3], it kind of upset me because I know [Gears of 3] is a better game on every level.' His comments were criticized by Destructoid and GamePro. In GamePro, McKinley Noble argued that 'slamming a 'bad' review that's actually pretty favorable does come off as selfish'.[55]
Sales[edit]
Gears of War 3 received more than one million pre-orders.[56] The game sold more than 3 million copies during its first weekâhigher than the previous two Gears of War entries.[57] It was the second-best selling game only behind Madden NFL 12.[58]

Gears Of War 3 Locust Characters PicturesAdam Fenix
